Growing a British spa network

Britain has an extraordinary network of spa towns, watering places and mineral springs, each shaped by its own waters, landscapes, architecture and traditions. Yet today there is no dedicated national network bringing these places together around their shared identity and future.
For much of the twentieth century, the British Spa Federation provided that connection, representing spa towns and helping them exchange knowledge, develop their offer and champion the value of Britain’s spas. Its successor organisations gradually evolved towards the contemporary spa and wellness industry, leaving a distinct gap for the towns and places themselves.
Harrogate Spa Society is helping to explore what a new national network could look like. Not simply a heritage body, but a practical forum for collaboration, ideas and renewal. A way for spa towns to learn from one another, strengthen their individual identities and collectively make the case for Britain’s spa culture.
The emerging network could connect work around:
-
Spa landscapes and waters, including springs, geology, parks and the wider spa anatomy.
-
Living spa culture, from bathing and movement to arts, events and contemporary programmes.
-
Knowledge and research, connecting archives, collections, universities and local expertise.
-
Conservation and place, strengthening the protection and stewardship of distinctive spa environments.
-
Regeneration and investment, exploring how spa identity can support future economic and cultural development.
-
International exchange, reconnecting British spa towns with the wider European spa tradition.
We are beginning conversations with organisations in other leading British spa towns, with the aim of shaping the network collaboratively and establishing where a renewed national body could add the greatest value.
